Today we considered how different examples of Photojournalism - telling narratives through images - can affect an audience's understanding with the possible 'meanings produced.
For your post session task please do a 500-700 word analysis of the example of photojournalism you discussed in your small groups in class. You will find three of the examples below. The other two will have been given to you as Word documents. This will also assist AS Photography students in part of their coursework.
I have also included the Duane Michals piece Things are Queer from 1973, for additional study if required.

AS Media - first assignment images: November 2012
Below you will find the selection of images available for you to analyse as part of your first assignment.
You need to choose two contrasting images - one from the choice of Wonderbra, Calvin Klein Lynx, Hugo Boss, or Levi's and either the anti-drugs campaign advert or the Aids awareness advert.
Remember, this is to assess your learning and understanding of what we have done so far. This is simply useful practice, but I will give you constructive feedback for future assignments.
You should concentrate on the elements of semiotics, such as denotation and connotation, along with the possible 'meanings' which you may elicit from the images. You may find the following aspects helpful:
1. Use of colour
2. Use of place (if applicable)
3. Use of people
You may also find yourself touching on other media concepts, such as audience, narrative and representation, but these will be covered in detail in future lessons.
You should aim to write between 500-750 words per advert, but if you wish to write more then feel free to do so.
You should put your analysis onto your blog so I can read them online, where I will also provide the feedback.
Please do the analysis as soon as possible while the information is still fresh in your minds.

Putting George Orwell's '1984' into context - short video
In week two of the AS Media course we discussed briefly the various reference points to George Orwell's chillingly prophetic and influential novel, 1984, and how they relate to today's media and society.
In this short video below, you will gain an understanding of the main themes of the book; hopefully you can then make firmer connections to the world we live in today, particularly with the issue of being constantly watched, whether on close circuit television, road cameras or our personal details being observed every time we log on to the internet or use a mobile phone.
Don't have nightmares...

A2 Media: Eden Lake - further reading
Click on the links below for a collection of articles on the impact of Eden Lake, the 'demonisation' of youth and the society which is represented - all taken from the excellent 'Collective Identity' blog.
http://collectiveidentity.posterous.com/eden-lake
http://collectiveidentity.posterous.com/demonisation-of-youth-past-and-present
http://collectiveidentity.posterous.com/hoodies-cinemas-new-bogeyman
One quote, in particular, is worth highlighting here from the second link:
“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”
Recent? No - this was written in approximately 345 B.C (that's nearly 2500 years ago), by the Greek philosopher, Plato. So perhaps the actions of the youths in Eden Lake are not so shocking, after all?

A2 Media - 'Eden Lake' articles - useful background information
Taken from The Guardian's film blog - some useful background information on the film - does not contain any 'spoilers' regarding the plot, but plenty of contextual issues which the film is based on.

This review from the site, Filmstubs, also takes a similar approach, focusing on the apparent 'demonisation' of 'chavs' in the media and horror films, specifically.

Additional reference and revision material for 'Advertising' - A2 Media
Have spent a few hours on a lazy Sunday afternoon trawling the internet for additional revision and reference pieces and come up with this little selection. One text is produced by Benetton to promote their 'UnHate' campaign from last year. There is then another which shows 40 years of Benetton advertising in 40 seconds, so it goes by rapidly and possibly not good if you happen to suffer from epilepsy, but does show how Toscani changed everything in the early 1980s, albeit at a very fast rate. A short piece produced by the BBC to highlight how some teenage girls feel about how women are pressurised by the media to look a certain way.
The three texts for the 'Killing Us Softly' series of lectures are extremely enlightening and very useful in terms of the representation of women in advertising. Jean Kilbourne, an influential academic who has researched this subject over a number of years, puts forward some very thought-provoking issues regarding the advertising of fashion, food and much more, and how the target audience of females are singled out deliberately by advertisers.
Although the messages and themes presented in the lectures are designed to provoke a serious response, Kilbourne does inject some humour and wit to lighten the mood at appropriate moments.
Each text is about thirty minutes long (the fourth film in the series is split over two parts), and well worth seeing to support the work we have done on the Dove campaign, and to a lesser extent to support the Benetton study. I cannot recommend these high enough.
Killing Us Softly: Lecture 3 (2000)
Killing Us Softly: Lecture 4 part 1 (2010)

40 Years of Benetton in 40 Seconds
UnHate Benetton campaign film (2011)
